How to Select the Right Material for a Pneumatic Diaphragm Pump?
2026-10-20 18:38:04

Pneumatic diaphragm pumps are widely used in chemical processing, mining, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, wastewater treatment, and general industrial transfer because they are safe in hazardous areas,self-priming,dry-run tolerant, and easy to maintain. However, choosing the wrong wetted materials can lead to premature failure, contamination, leaks,or costly downtime. The key to a reliable installation is matching the pump’s internal contact materials to the fluid, operating conditions, and industry requirements.

This article explains how to select the right materials for a pneumatic diaphragm pump in a practical,step-by-step way.

1.Understand What“Material Selection”Means

In a diaphragm pump,“material”usually refers to two groups:

1.Wetted housing/body materials–the fluid side of the pump,including manifolds,chambers,and sometimes balls,seats,and check valve components.

2.Elastomer/diaphragm materials–the flexible parts that separate air and fluid and create the pumping action, plus seals and valve balls/seats.

Both must be compatible with the pumped fluid.A chemically perfect body but an incompatible diaphragm can still cause failure.

2.Identify the Fluid Properties First

Before comparing metals or plastics, collect basic fluid data:

•Chemical composition:acids,solvents,caustics,oils,slurries,or mixtures.

•Concentration:many chemicals are harmless at low concentration but aggressive at high concentration.

•pH range:acidic,neutral,or alkaline.

•Temperature:maximum and minimum operating temperature.

•Solids content:particle size,shape,hardness,and percentage by volume.

•Viscosity:thin solvents vs.thick pastes or sludges.

•Hygiene requirements:food-grade,pharmaceutical,or potable water use.

•Flammability/explosion risk:affects air safety and material cleanliness needs.

The more accurately you define the fluid, the easier it is to avoid over-or under-specifying materials.

3.Choose the Right Pump Body/Wetted Housing Material

Common options include:

Cast Iron

•Good for water,mild slurries,oils,and non-corrosive general service.

•Economical but not suitable for aggressive chemicals or food use.

•Can rust if exposed to moisture during storage or idle periods.

Stainless Steel(304/316/316L)

•316/316L is preferred for corrosive chemicals, salty water, food, dairy, beverage, and pharmaceutical applications.

•Excellent strength,cleanability,and durability.

•Higher cost than plastic or cast iron, but often the best life-cycle choice.

Aluminum

•Lightweight and good for many industrial fluids, paints, and solvents where corrosion resistance is moderate.

•Not ideal for strong alkalis, some acids,or highly corrosive services.

Polypropylene(PP)

•Excellent resistance to many acids and alkaline solutions at moderate temperatures.

•Lightweight and cost-effective for chemical transfer.

•Lower mechanical strength than metal;not suitable for very high temperatures or abrasive heavy slurries.

PVDF(Polyvinylidene Fluoride)

•Very strong chemical resistance to aggressive acids, solvents, and many harsh chemicals.

•Higher temperature capability than PP.

•Commonly used in semiconductor,chemical,and corrosive-fluid applications.

Special Alloys(Hastelloy,Alloy 20,Monel,etc.)

•Used for extreme corrosion,high-temperature acids,or specialized process fluids.

•Expensive but necessary in severe services.

Rule of thumb:match aggression and temperature to material class. For unknown or mixed chemicals, request a chemical compatibility chart from the pump manufacturer.

4.Select the Correct Diaphragm and Elastomer

The diaphragm is often the most critical wear part.Common choices:

NBR/Buna-N

•Good for water, oils, fuels, and many aliphatic hydrocarbons.

•Poor resistance to strong acids, ozone, ketones, and many solvents.

EPDM

•Excellent for hot water, steam, mild acids/alkalis,and outdoor ozone resistance.

•Poor with oils,fuels,and many hydrocarbons.

FKM/Viton

•Excellent for high temperature and many aggressive chemicals, fuels, and solvents.

•Not ideal for amines, ketones, esters,or some hot steam/acid combinations.

PTFE/Teflon

•Outstanding chemical resistance to almost all media.

•Often used in pure chemical,pharmaceutical,and high-purity applications.

•Lower mechanical flexibility than rubber;may require backup supports depending on design.

Santoprene/TPE

•Good general-purpose thermoplastic elastomer for mild chemicals,water,and abrasion-resistant duties.

•Cost-effective alternative to rubber in many industrial services.

Neoprene

•Moderate oil,weather,and chemical resistance.

•Less common today but still used in specific general-service applications.

When selecting elastomers, consider not only chemical resistance but also temperature range, flexibility, fatigue life, and abrasive wear.

5.Consider Abrasion and Solids Handling

If the fluid contains sand, grit, catalyst powder, ceramic slurry, mine tailings,or other hard particles, material hardness and wear resistance matter.

•Use hardened seats/balls or abrasion-resistant elastomers where appropriate.

•Avoid soft diaphragms in extremely sharp-slurry service unless validated.

•Consider larger pump sizes to reduce cycle speed;slower cycling extends diaphragm life.

•For very abrasive duty, request wear-package options from the manufacturer.

6.Evaluate Temperature and Pressure Limits

Each material has allowable temperature and pressure ranges:

•PP bodies are typically limited to lower temperatures than metals or PVDF.

•Rubber diaphragms have narrower temperature windows than PTFE or FKM.

•High ambient temperature in the air section can also affect seals and performance.

Always select materials using the worst-case fluid temperature, not just average temperature.

7.Check Industry and Compliance Requirements

Different industries have different expectations:

•Food and beverage:stainless 316L,FDA-compatible elastomers,smooth finishes,CIP/SIP capability.

•Pharmaceutical/biotech:hygienic design, traceable materials,USP Class VI or FDA elastomers,316L electropolished surfaces.

•Chemical:PP,PVDF,PTFE,stainless,or special alloys depending on MSDS data.

•Mining/utilities:cast iron, aluminum,or hardened packages for abrasion.

•Explosive atmospheres:pneumatic operation is advantageous, but confirm diaphragm/discharge and grounding requirements with local codes.

8.Balance Cost vs.Life-Cycle Value

The cheapest pump is not always the lowest total cost.A low-cost body with incompatible elastomers may fail in weeks.A more expensive PVDF or 316L pump may run for years with minimal maintenance.

When comparing options,include:

•Expected diaphragm replacement interval

•Spare parts price

•Downtime cost

•Chemical leakage risk

•Cleaning and sanitation requirements

•Energy/air consumption differences

9.Practical Selection Checklist

Use this quick checklist before ordering:

1.What exact chemical(s)are being pumped, and at what concentration?

2.What is the pH and temperature range?

3.Are solids present?Size,hardness,and percentage?

4.Is the fluid viscous,flammable,toxic,or hazardous?

5.Is food/pharma/potable-water compliance required?

6.What is the desired flow rate and discharge pressure?

7.What air supply pressure and quality are available?

8.How many cycles per minute are expected in normal duty?

9.Has the manufacturer provided a written chemical compatibility recommendation?

10.Are spare diaphragms, balls, seats, and seals readily available?

10.Common Mistakes to Avoid

•Selecting the body material only and ignoring diaphragm compatibility.

•Using generic“chemical-resistant”descriptions instead of checking concentration and temperature.

•Choosing very hard materials for abrasive slurry without adjusting cycle rate.

•Over-specifying exotic alloys when PP or 316 would perform well, increasing cost unnecessarily.

•Ignoring temperature spikes during cleaning or batch processing.

•Using oil-contaminated compressed air, which can damage seals and internal air valves regardless of fluid-side material.

Selecting the right material for a pneumatic diaphragm pump starts with the fluid, not the pump model.Define chemical composition, concentration, temperature, abrasives, and compliance needs first. Then choose a body material—such as cast iron, stainless steel, aluminum, polypropylene,or PVDF—and pair it with a compatible diaphragm and seal elastomer such as NBR,EPDM,FKM,PTFE,or Santoprene. For severe corrosion or abrasion, consider special alloys and dedicated wear packages.

A correct material selection improves safety, extends service life, reduces maintenance, and ensures the pump performs reliably in the specific process environment. When in doubt, always request a chemical compatibility review from the pump manufacturer using your actual fluid data sheet.
